MY ROOTS
Jade Yasmeen Jarrett, a name synonymous with hyper-realism and poignant social commentary, began her artistic odyssey in the state of Florida. There, amidst the vibrant tapestry of diverse influences, she learned how to appreciate art, creating acrylic paintings that featured otherworldly creatures, uniquely her own.
While pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Education and Sociology at the University of South Florida, Jade seamlessly blended academia with her artistic pursuits. She navigated the Indie Flea markets and the digital realm, showcasing and selling her creations. Her ambitions were anchored in the dream of becoming a university professor, a journey she began by interning at elementary schools and stepping in as a substitute teacher for post-primary education.
However, destiny had another calling. At the age of 24, Jade received an apprenticeship offer in Redondo Beach, California, where she immersed herself in the world of hyper-realism under the guidance of a master oil painter. This marked a pivotal chapter in her artistic evolution, steering her towards a path where the canvas became a powerful medium for social commentary.
In 2020, she amassed popularity through her self-portrait ‘Tired Eyes’, a 36” x 48” oil painting that effectively captured the anguish and exhaustion police brutality brought to the globe following the tragic case of George Floyd. ‘Tired Eyes’ opened up Jarrett’s voice through art, speaking on the power imbalances between minorities and government officials.
A year later, Jade's art found a prestigious platform at Art Basel Miami, an international art fair. Her paintings, 'The Pain Below' and 'Mae,' transcended the canvas to encapsulate the bravery, strength, and beauty of black women challenging the status quo and shaping history. Both paintings found a permanent home in historical museums - 'The Pain Below' at The Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama, and 'Mae' at the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina.
Today, Jade Yasmeen Jarrett continues her journey in Los Angeles, a perpetual student delving into new hyper-realism methods and uncovering the world's history through the lens of her ancestors. With a mindset that embraces both creativity and historical consciousness, Jade stands as a testament to the enduring power of art in sparking dialogue and promoting change.
